Universal UK Construction Update: September Road Closures and Enabling Works
Manor Road remains closed to through traffic 24 hours a day while Universal carries out site stabilisation and enabling works. The current closure runs until 27 November 2026. Separate temporary traffic management was scheduled around the Woburn Road/Broadmead Road junction from 21 to 25 September; those dates have now passed.
These arrangements were checked against the Universal UK Project community updates on 20 September 2026. Anyone travelling locally should check the official page before setting off, because road arrangements can change.
What happened on Broadmead Road earlier in September?
Universal listed weekday stop/go boards on Broadmead Road from 9.30am to 3.30pm between 1 and 18 September for road improvements and utility works. That was an earlier phase of traffic management, separate from the later 21–25 September arrangements.
What was announced for Woburn Road and Broadmead Road on 21–25 September?
Universal announced temporary traffic management on Woburn Road near the adjacent lay-by and the Broadmead Road junction from 21 to 25 September 2026, between 9.30am and 6pm each day, while site preparation work continues. The lay-by was scheduled to close between 2pm and 6pm during this period.
During the 9.30am to 6pm working hours, the existing traffic lights at the Woburn Road/Broadmead Road junction were scheduled to be switched out in favour of alternative temporary traffic management. Drivers should follow the signs and directions in place at the time.
Why is Manor Road closed?
Manor Road is under a 24-hour closure to through traffic from 27 July to 27 November 2026. Universal says the closure is part of its ongoing site stabilisation and enabling works.
Universal also says further traffic management on Manor Road will be required after 27 November. It has not yet confirmed what those arrangements will be, so the end of the current closure period should not be read as a promise that normal access will resume on 28 November.
What are enabling works?
“Enabling works” is a broad construction term. It covers the preparation needed before later stages of a major development can move ahead safely and efficiently. Depending on the location, that can include access, utilities, drainage, ground preparation and temporary construction arrangements.
For Universal UK, the important distinction is that enabling activity is now under way, but it is not evidence that a particular ride, themed land or guest building is being constructed. Those details have not been announced. Our Universal UK construction updates page keeps the confirmed site picture separate from speculation.
Are footpaths affected too?
Yes. The project’s community page lists closures affecting Stewartby Footpaths 1 and 2 from 29 January 2026, and Stewartby Footpath A1 and Elstow Footpath 8 from 1 April 2026. Walkers should use the latest local notices rather than relying on an older route map.
What does this tell us about the wider project?
It is easy to look at roadworks and jump straight to rollercoasters. The more useful reading is simpler: Universal is preparing the Bedford site and the infrastructure around it for a very large development scheduled to open in 2031.
Road and utility work may feel unglamorous, but it is the groundwork that has to happen before the visible resort begins to take shape. For the geography behind the works, see our guide to where Universal UK is being built and the Universal UK map.
What should local drivers do?
Check the official update before travelling, follow temporary signs and allow extra time around Woburn Road, Broadmead Road and Manor Road. Universal also provides a route for reporting issues connected with its site works.
We will update this article when Universal confirms the next Manor Road traffic arrangements.
