Universal United Kingdom Resort: Complete Guide

Universal United Kingdom Resort—often searched for as “Universal Studios UK”—is Universal’s first branded theme park and resort destination in the UK and Europe. It is being developed in Bedfordshire, with opening planned for 2031.

The project is now beyond the speculative stage. The UK Government has formally signed an agreement with Universal Destinations & Experiences to move ahead with the development, planning permission has been granted through a Special Development Order, and works began on site in 2026.

This guide brings together what is currently confirmed about the resort, what is still unknown, and where to find more detailed Theme Park Trip guides as the project develops.

Universal UK at a glance

Confirmed so far:

  • Official name: Universal United Kingdom Resort.
  • Location: Bedford Borough, Bedfordshire, around the former brickworks and adjoining land at Kempston Hardwick.
  • Planned opening: 2031.
  • A world-class Universal theme park with several themed lands.
  • Thrilling rides, innovative attractions, immersive storytelling and entertainment experiences.
  • A 500-room hotel.
  • Retail, dining and entertainment as part of the wider resort.
  • Major supporting transport and infrastructure improvements, including an expanded Wixams railway station and new road connections.

Not yet confirmed publicly:

  • A specific opening date within 2031.
  • Ticket prices or when tickets will go on sale.
  • Final themed-land names.
  • Individual ride names or the complete ride lineup.
  • Specific film, television or game franchises for the UK resort.
  • A final detailed guest map.
  • The hotel name, room types or booking details.

Those unknowns matter. There is already substantial speculation around possible attractions and intellectual property, but Theme Park Trip does not treat rumours as facts.

Where will Universal United Kingdom Resort be?

The resort is being developed in Bedfordshire, in Bedford Borough, on and around the former brickworks site at Kempston Hardwick south of Bedford.

The location gives the project access to the A421 corridor and the Midland Main Line. Universal and government material also identify transport improvements intended to support the development, including an expanded Wixams railway station, direct slip roads from the A421, improvements to Manor Road and upgrades to the local active-travel network.

For more detail on the site and surrounding area, see our dedicated Universal UK location guide.

When will Universal UK open?

The current planned opening year is 2031.

That is not the same as a confirmed public opening date. No day or month has been announced, and no ticket-release timetable has been published.

The project has moved materially forward: planning permission is in force, works started in 2026 and the development programme is now progressing towards the stated 2031 opening.

Our Universal UK opening-date guide tracks the latest timing information and explains the key milestones that still sit between construction and opening day.

What will be inside Universal United Kingdom Resort?

Universal says the resort will include a world-class theme park with several themed lands featuring its style of immersive storytelling, thrilling rides, innovative attractions and entertainment.

The wider resort will also include a 500-room hotel plus retail, dining and entertainment.

Universal has not yet publicly confirmed the final names of individual rides, themed lands or franchises for the UK resort.

Our Universal UK rides and attractions guide will own the detailed attraction picture as more information is officially announced.

What rides will Universal UK have?

Universal has confirmed that the theme park will contain rides and innovative attractions, but the complete lineup has not been announced.

It is too early to publish a definitive list of UK rides. Attractions at other Universal destinations can provide context for the kind of experiences Universal creates, but they are not evidence that the same rides or franchises will appear in Bedfordshire.

Theme Park Trip will update the dedicated rides and attractions page when authoritative information becomes available.

Will Universal UK have Harry Potter?

There is no confirmation at present that Harry Potter will be part of Universal United Kingdom Resort.

The franchise is strongly associated with other Universal parks, which has naturally fuelled speculation, but that does not make it confirmed for the UK resort. We will not present it as fact unless Universal or another controlling authoritative source confirms it.

Will Universal UK have a hotel?

Yes. Universal’s current published information states that the resort will include a 500-room hotel.

The hotel’s name, exact positioning, room categories, opening arrangements and booking details have not yet been announced. Those details should be treated as unknown until Universal publishes them.

What is the planning status?

Planning permission for the entertainment resort complex was granted by the Secretary of State through a Special Development Order. Government material states that the Order came into force on 12 January 2026.

This is an important distinction from the earlier proposal stage: the resort now has a formal planning route in place and works are progressing.

Planning documents can still contain design information that evolves during delivery, so they should not automatically be read as a final guest-facing map or final attraction lineup.

Our Universal UK planning and approvals guide explains the process in more detail.

Is construction underway?

Yes. Bedford Borough Council states that works on site started in 2026.

Universal’s official project website is now publishing updates on on-site works, infrastructure and community engagement as the development progresses.

Construction is one of the fastest-changing parts of the project, so our Universal UK construction updates page tracks material milestones separately from this overview.

How much is being invested?

Universal’s June 2026 media factsheet says Comcast NBCUniversal has committed to invest more than £5 billion during the expected five years of construction, with an additional £1 billion of capital investment planned over the first ten years of operation.

Government and Universal material also estimate that the project could generate nearly £50 billion of economic benefit for the UK.

The development is expected to support around 20,000 jobs during construction and around 8,000 direct jobs once operational, with employment expected to grow over time.

How will visitors get there?

Detailed visitor transport arrangements will become clearer closer to opening, but several major infrastructure measures are already part of the development programme.

These include the expanded Wixams railway station, direct slip roads from the A421, improvements to Manor Road and active-travel upgrades.

Rail access is evolving and should be treated carefully because different transport schemes in the area are at different stages. Our getting to Universal UK by train guide separates the Wixams station project from the proposed East West Rail Stewartby station.

Is there a Universal UK map?

There are planning and project materials showing the development area, but these should not be treated as a final guest map or as proof of precise ride locations.

See our Universal UK map and site guide for a clear explanation of the planning zones, nearby roads and rail links.

What still needs to be announced?

The biggest unanswered visitor questions are the ones most people will eventually use to plan a trip: the exact opening date, ticket prices, operating calendar, attraction lineup, themed lands, confirmed franchises, final guest map, hotel booking details, restaurants and day-to-day transport arrangements.

Those gaps are normal for a resort that is still several years from opening. We will keep them clearly labelled as unknown until reliable information is published.

Latest position

As of 2 September 2026, Universal United Kingdom Resort is a confirmed major resort development in Bedfordshire with planning permission in force, works underway and opening planned for 2031.

The broad resort components are now established, but many of the details visitors care most about — individual rides, franchises, tickets, final maps and exact opening arrangements — remain unannounced.

Theme Park Trip will keep this guide as the main Universal UK overview and link out to specialist pages as each part of the project becomes detailed enough to deserve its own guide.
