Things to Do Near Universal UK: Bedford and Bedfordshire Guide
Universal United Kingdom Resort is still years from opening, but its Bedford location is already prompting a useful visitor-planning question: what are the best things to do in Bedford and nearby?
The answer is more varied than a quick motorway stop might suggest. Bedford offers riverside walks, museums and parks, while the wider county adds historic gardens, aircraft, wildlife and family attractions. This guide is designed as a starting point rather than a fixed itinerary. Opening times, admission arrangements and transport links can change, so always check the attraction’s own website before travelling.
Start in Bedford town centre
Bedford is the easiest place to build a low-effort half day. The River Great Ouse and Embankment provide a pleasant walking route close to the town centre, with bridges, green space and places to stop for food. It works particularly well if you want something flexible rather than another timed attraction.
The Higgins Bedford is the town’s principal museum and art gallery. Its collections bring together local history, archaeology, watercolours and decorative art in the Castle Quarter. Entry and temporary exhibitions can vary, so check the official site before visiting.
Bedford town centre is also useful as a practical base. It has rail connections, restaurants and accommodation, and it sits north of the future resort site. Our guide to where Universal UK is explains the geography and the distinction between Bedford, Wixams and the construction area.
Priory Country Park
Priory Country Park offers lakes, woodland, grassland and walking routes on the eastern side of Bedford. It is a good option for a quieter morning or afternoon, especially for families who want open space without committing to a full paid attraction.
Conditions and facilities can change with weather and maintenance. Check Bedford Borough Council information before setting out, particularly if accessibility, parking or a specific path matters to your visit.
Wrest Park
Wrest Park, near Silsoe, combines a nineteenth-century mansion with gardens that reflect around 300 years of design. The formal areas, woodland paths, water features and pavilion make it a strong choice for visitors who enjoy heritage without spending the whole day indoors.
It is managed by English Heritage and has its own programme of seasonal events. Admission prices, opening hours and individual building access should be checked directly. The gardens are extensive, so allow more time than you might expect from the map.
Shuttleworth Collection and Swiss Garden
Shuttleworth, near Biggleswade, is one of Bedfordshire’s most distinctive days out. Its collection includes historic aircraft and vehicles, while the Swiss Garden and wider estate provide a contrasting outdoor visit.
The site also holds air shows and other events, which can substantially change ticketing, traffic and the feel of the day. Check the event calendar before travelling. For enthusiasts, it could justify most of a day; for a mixed group, the combination of engineering, history and gardens gives everyone a different angle.
Woburn Safari Park
Woburn Safari Park is the biggest family attraction in this list. The official site describes a self-drive Road Safari, Foot Safari, keeper talks and indoor and outdoor play areas, with more than 75 species.
The practical detail matters: the safari park is entered in your own suitable vehicle and cannot be treated like a walk-in town attraction. Read its current vehicle rules, ticket conditions and opening information before booking. Woburn is in the wider Bedfordshire area rather than immediately beside the future Universal site, so plan it as a separate outing.
A Bedfordshire heritage day
Visitors who prefer smaller-scale stops can combine a market town, country walk or heritage property rather than trying to tick off major attractions. Ampthill, for example, is well placed for independent food and a walk on the Greensand Ridge. Elstow has links with John Bunyan and sits close to the southern side of Bedford.
These places are valuable precisely because they are not theme parks. If Universal UK encourages longer stays, local streets, cafés, parks and cultural attractions can become part of a more rounded trip rather than background scenery between hotel and resort.
How to choose the right base
Before the resort opens, there is no single “best” place to stay for a Universal UK visit. Bedford is the clearest public-transport base today. Milton Keynes has a larger supply of accommodation and national transport links. Smaller Bedfordshire locations may suit drivers looking for countryside or a quieter stay.
That judgement could change as the resort, Wixams station expansion, road improvements and hotel market develop. Do not assume that a current road distance predicts the final guest entrance or transfer time.
If you are researching transport as well as attractions, start with our getting to Universal UK overview and our Universal UK by train guide. Both pages separate current travel facts from future resort connections that have not yet been announced.
Suggested two-day combinations
For a relaxed culture-and-outdoors break, combine Bedford’s riverfront and The Higgins with Wrest Park.
For families, pair a shorter Bedford stop with a separate day at Woburn Safari Park.
For engineering and heritage fans, give Shuttleworth most of a day and use Bedford for dinner or an overnight stay.
For a low-cost visit, focus on the Embankment, town centre and a country park, checking parking and any event-day restrictions in advance.
The important point is not to overpack the itinerary. Travel times in a new destination are easy to underestimate, and several attractions deserve more than a rushed hour.
What could change when Universal UK opens
A major resort could stimulate new hotels, restaurants, tours and transport products across the region. Some will be genuinely useful; others may use “near Universal” loosely.
Theme Park Trip will judge future recommendations by practical travel time, verified access and reader value. We will label affiliate relationships clearly when they are introduced, and we will not treat paid placement as evidence that somewhere is convenient.
For now, use this guide to understand the area rather than to book a future package. The Universal UK hub will carry confirmed visitor information as it emerges.
