Universal UK by Train: Rail Stations & Future Services

Universal United Kingdom Resort is planned to have significantly improved rail access, but the final visitor rail network is still being developed years ahead of the resort’s planned 2031 opening.

The two most important station projects to understand are Wixams and Stewartby. They are different projects on different rail corridors and should not be confused.

Will Universal UK have a railway station?

The approved resort planning framework includes an expanded four-platform Wixams railway station and a shuttle-bus connection between Wixams and the Theme Park.

Wixams is on the Midland Main Line south of Bedford. The station project existed before Universal’s Bedford resort was confirmed, but Universal dramatically changed the scale and strategic role being considered for it.

What happened to the original Wixams station plan?

Before the Universal announcement, Bedford Borough Council was progressing a smaller two-platform Wixams station, with an anticipated 2026 entry-into-service date.

That older timetable is now legacy information.

After the Universal project progressed, the Council recorded that the existing two-platform project needed to be terminated or superseded so that a larger station could be designed for the Universal development. Bedford Borough Council, Network Rail and central government have since been assessing a more ambitious four-platform arrangement.

This is why older articles saying “Wixams station will open in 2026” should not be used as the current Universal travel plan.

What would the expanded Wixams station do?

Planning documents for the resort include a four-platform station and a shuttle-bus service connecting the station with the Theme Park.

A larger station could provide more capacity and potentially allow a broader range of rail services than the original local two-platform scheme. However, the final operating timetable, stopping patterns and guest-transfer arrangements are not yet confirmed for the resort’s opening.

October 2026: Wixams station design and contractor update

Network Rail says it is leading development of a four-platform Wixams station to serve Universal UK visitors, workers and local residents. The earlier smaller-station project has been stopped; designs for the larger scheme are being developed, with survey work expected in 2026 and main works not expected to restart until 2027.

In a Wixams project recruitment notice publicly accessible by 27 October 2026, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure identifies itself as the civils and station contractor under the Eastern Routes Partnership for Network Rail. The notice describes the scheme as moving into ES3 Option Selection under Network Rail’s PACE framework, with Morgan Sindall involved in design development. The notice does not give its original publication date or the appointment’s effective date.

This is evidence of contractor involvement and ongoing option selection, not approval of a final station design or a confirmed start or opening date. Train services, station facilities and the precise shuttle/visitor-transfer arrangements remain to be confirmed.

What is the proposed Stewartby station?

East West Rail is separately progressing a consolidated Stewartby station proposal as part of its work on the Marston Vale Line corridor.

East West Rail has said the consolidated station is intended to help people travel to the Universal resort while also serving local communities. The design and exact relationship with the resort are still developing.

Stewartby is not the same project as Wixams station.

Which station will be best for Universal UK?

It is too early to give a final answer.

Wixams is directly incorporated into the resort’s planning and is expected to have a shuttle connection to the Theme Park. Stewartby is part of the separate East West Rail programme and could provide another sustainable route from the wider rail network.

The best station for a future visitor may depend on where they are travelling from, which services ultimately call at each station, and Universal’s final guest-transport arrangements.

Can I plan a 2031 train journey now?

Not reliably.

The broad infrastructure direction is clear, but the exact future timetable, station-opening dates, fares, ticket integration and shuttle arrangements are not yet fixed. Any detailed journey plan created today would risk becoming obsolete long before the resort opens.

As 2031 approaches, this guide will evolve from an infrastructure explainer into a practical journey-planning page with actual routes, interchange advice and verified travel times.

What about Bedford station?

Bedford remains an important existing rail hub for the area and is also affected by wider East West Rail proposals. How Bedford, Wixams, Stewartby and other stations ultimately divide Universal visitor demand will depend on the final network and service plan.

For now, the key message is simple: major rail improvements are part of the Universal UK transport strategy, but the final visitor journey is not yet fixed.
